What will 2012 look like at The French Hen?

I had a wonderfully productive stint at the Atlanta Gift Show last week. From which new product has already begun to arrive at The French Hen. Inspiration and creativity were everywhere and the showrooms ranged the gambit; sublime to the redonkulous. It's all there, the good, the bad and the oh so very tacky.
A few trends that I picked up may be worth noting. Industrial has been refined to a softer- edged utilitarian. I saw lots of ticking, craft paper, burlaps, seed bags, galvanized surfaces, but gone are the wheels and gears that we had been seeing. Tabletop is "green", stone slabs, big thick (wonderful) cutting boards, simple glassware and plates. Lots and lots of rough hewn furniture, (driftwood tones)which I think may look too unfinished for most nutmeggers.
It seems like the Parisian apartment dealio is being replaced by a more casual Italian villa vibe. Things just looked less fussy. When there was an ornate piece of furniture it was paired with simple clean lamps or vice versa. We all know matchy- matcy is out but now adjacencies of the unexpected are what make a room look interesting. Textile patterns are less in the floral department and are more modern with color blocking, and trellis or flame (zig- zag)patterns.

Stop in soon to see what I decided to bring back with me. I want to go back to more of a home décor mix; linens, tabletop, small furniture pieces and hopefully some interesting vintage. The French Hen will soon be lush with wonderful things that you just won’t be able to live without.

My friend,Jackie and I headed off to treasure hunt at the Brimfield Antique Fair yesterday. We had a great time foraging through a couple of the fields, wishing for more time. We found everything from cowboy boots to an embalming table (eek!). The vendor booths ranged from dump-worthy to sublime and the crowd... fascinating. If you like "old stuff" Brimfield is a must. I am already looking forward to going back in the Spring.

This painted chest was my 2nd purchase of the day...can't decide if I should find a place in my home or if it should head into the shop....?

I haven't posted in so long...been a little busy with the closing of our gallery. Left Bank Gallery Essex opened a little over 3 years ago right next door to The French Hen. The overhead for a 5,000 sq foot space on Main St in Essex is, well...astronomical and the numbers (and economy) were just not worthwhile. We have enjoyed the experience immensely, and have certainly learned A LOT in the last three years through the gallery. We have learned about art, the value of great employees, what is possible and about managing the personalities and expectations of 60+ artists at any given moment. I have met wonderful artists and clients, all of whom seem truly saddened by our closing which is touching. I am proud of what we accomplished at LBGE and feel great about bringing so much wonderful art to our community...some of it even pushed the envelope a bit! But, time to move on and take care of the family and "the hen." I am looking forward to spending more time in my little shop which I adore...so pop on by and say hello.

Well, the e fair is this weekend (YAY!!) and this winter of endless snow has prevented me from appropriately preparing for the festivities... Everytime I go in to the shop to price and pack the goodies, I get the call that school getting out early, going in late or is all-together cancelled. But don't fret my lovelies, we are bringing the merch! The main offerings will be our newest scarves and jewelry at 30% off. Fabulous scarves..with trims and collaged fabrics. color of 2011: Honeysuckle

Honeysuckle, the "adult" shade of pink, has been named the color of 2011 by Pantone, the color-services company whose advice influences what we're sold to wear, decorate with and even eat off of. Honeysuckle is not the puffy-fluffy pastel pink of cotton candy but a reddish-pink with blue undertones. It's sophisticated and stimulating but not agressive. You can really jazz up your winter grays with a splash of this perfect pink. Wardrobes can be brightened up and totally updated with just a hint of this color trend. And since every single skintone, light or dark, is complemented by the pink tones you can't really go wrong here. Have you ever noticed how handsome men look wearing a pale pink oxford or bright coral polo? Wrap your neck in a pink scarf and you are absolutely current and your skin glows! But when it comes to interior design use honeysuckle with some restraint. Don't do a whole room or a room-sized rug. Pillows or single accent walls are the way to go with honeysuckle. Beautiful when toned down a bit by pairing it with the more masculine neutrals like taupe, gray and brown.

The French Hen will be closing for a couple of weeks after Valentine's Day for a bit of a facelift. Just a freshen up, botox here, paint and spackle there. When we reopen in mid-March there will be a new logo for our signage, bags, wrapping and business cards. That's what I think I am most thrilled about...the new branding material. It will be nice to give the little hen a bit of attention, she is 5 years old this Valentine's Day after all. That's pretty old, especially when I think about it in terms of my childrens' years. My Danny-boy was 6 and Seamus was 7 and half when the doors first opened! Wow! Now at 11 and 13, life has changed - of course. As I recently read, the days may be long but the years are short when you are watching your children grow.

During the brief time that The French Hen will be closed, our Pandora jewelry will be temporarily housed right next door at Left Bank Gallery Essex for customer convenience. So the sale of Pandora will not be interupted in Essex, phew! It will give folks a chance to wander amidst the magic of 5000 square feet of art & soul.

A colleague shared some information with me about a new project.
It's called the 3/50 Project, and it is a grassroots campaign designed to "save" independent businesses.

Participation is really simple. Choose your three favorite locally owned businesses, and at those three shops combined, commit to spending $50 a month.

If half of the U.S. population did this, we would generate more than $42 trillion in revenue. For every $100 spent in locally owned independent stores, $68 returns to the community through taxes, payroll and other expenditures. If you spend that in a national chain, only $43 stays local.

So get out there and support your local independent stores!

This is a lovely chandelier complete with tiny bluebirds and blossoms. It's jewelry for your house. This one was created especially for my home and happily lives in my dining room. Whenever I see it I smile. The birds were painted the exact shade of my dining room...beacon gray, which to me is more of an "ice blue".

The quintessential handbag for the super prep this summer... you know who you are...too cute! Some of these designs were custom for "the hen". I requested a simpler palette for the ribbons in order to keep the bags a bit more neutral and classic.

Hey Y'all, that's how we talk down here in Atlanta, where the hospitality is so warm even strangers smile at each other as they cross the street. I have been here at market for 2 days now and you could never tell that there is an "economic crisis" underway - based on attendance and the orders being written. I admit that I am buying carefully and even considering how to work products around existing inventory to make everything seem new and absolutely irresistible.

We have become very well-known at "the hen" for our special spring and Easter displays.No one will be disappointed this year. Yes, we will have the classic velveteen rabbits with their basket brimming with woodland violets and some really clever new things too. The customers who travel across state lines for the spring goodies will have made a worthwhile trip.

I found some very sweet things for young girls to give their "BFFs"...trinket boxes, hand mirrors, jewelry all with great price points. And for the big girls - furniture, ahh, my favorite thing to buy...settees, an upholstered bed with a curved foot board that just oozes with relaxing luxuriousness, grain sack pillows, lamps, the perfect marble top dining table. Jewelery, of course Pandora has some great new offerings for spring. I was able to plan the trunk show for Valentine's day with my sales rep, Barbara, amid the chaos of the 4th floor in Bldg 3. Other jewelery includes delicate stone and wire work set in sterling silver and then there will be more of the bold, chunky pearls. Oh! And books! Stunning books, clever, cute, beautiful...lots of books. They will add so much to the mix this year. I think they will get snapped up as soon as they are unpacked. Love the one titled What Happy Parents Do, it's the perfect baby shower gift.

I don't mean to sound so shocked but I am thrilled to have found many NEW things to stock The French Hen with this fall, winter and spring. One of my favorite finds is absolutely brand new. It is a line of soaps, perfumes, lip balms and greeting cards. The packaging is perfection. The soaps, lavender and honey scented, are wrapped in stunning papers strewn with dragonflies and Elizabethan-era dancing ladies...highlighted with the tiniest bit of German glitter. They are so pretty that you will gasp... I can't wait.

My big focus at this market has been jewelry and you won't be disappointed. I delved deep into the layered chain look with multiple pendants and pearls. I like this look so much because you can mix and match the pieces, adding enhancers and initial pendants. The pearls make them "classically-Connecticut" as I discussed with a designer today.

Sorry for not posting in such a long time. I have been busy with the opening of a new art gallery. Left Bank Gallery Essex opened on May 15 with a bang. It's a 5000 square foot gallery that houses the works of over 60 artists. The space itself was a gallery before so the improvements were "minor" although they were costly and time consuming but the outcome is frankly, fantastic! I am back in the game now however and will be posting new and exciting info about the shop on a much more regular basis. I sit in the airport in Providence on my way to Market in Atlanta and hope to be able to post from Market to give a preview of my finds.

This lush Easter and garden display is meant to remind everyone (including me)that Spring will come. March came in like a lion here in Connecticut, let's hope it goes out like lamb! Easter is so early this year...March 23 and we are almost sold out of our romantic velveteen bunnies. Well, it's Day 4 for me here at the Atlanta Gift Show and I have found some really great new merchandise for "the hen". I picked out beautiful new linens for your tables, stunning dishware with a beachy theme, subtle beachy...no tacky flip flops here. Don't get me wrong, flip flops can be very cute but I think we have seen about enough, don't you? I have selected adorable PJs in a pink and green toile and plenty of very feminine bath and body products. Lollia has expanded their line again and has added new fragrances. Plus, they will soon be offering Relax in a cologne! I know, I know, finally they have listened to our many requests and should be offering it this summer. I, for one, adore the Relax fragrance and plan to use it as my signature scent. There will be lots of new delectable surprises for you, your valentines and your Easter Baskets.

One of the highlights of the show was a "curious dinner" party held at the Pleasant Peasant restaurant. The dinner was arranged by the owner of the Curious Sofa in Prairie Village, Kansas, Debbie Dusenberry. Twenty of her blog readers, who happen to be shop owners from all over the country, met for a lovely dinner and lively shop talk. What fun! Debbie and her home were most recently featured in (and on the cover of) the January issue of Country Living magazine. Check out Debbie's website and blog, she rocks. I am so lucky. I have a staff of fabulous women who care about the shop and me. We hosted a Pandora Trunk Show last night that was very successful. The success was the feeling that overwhelmed me when I walked into the shop, after dashing across the street to grab another bottle of Proseco, to hear a lovely group of women talking and laughing and really enjoying themselves at the french hen. Nobody was thinking about their responsibilities...it was the sound of people having fun. If it wasn't for my staff of Diane and Cindy (guest appearance by Paulette) I wouldn't be able to swing it. Thank you, thank you.

We just recieved a lovely selection of gloves and hats. The gloves are the kind that make me long for the colder weather. We have soft fingerless gloves in gorgeous colors like baby blue, cream, scarlet and pistachio. I have a prediction... fingerless gloves are here to stay, for awhile anyway. They are great for those chilly days that don't quite threaten of frostbite, for when you need to find your keys, sip your tea or paint a masterpiece. We have some fantastic "opera-length" gloves (full fingers) that are adorned with four delicate little buttons. The long gloves are great for the cape-wearing fashionistas. The shop is lush with product. Christmas is only 2 months away. We will be fully decked-out with glitter and sparkles by this weekend.

Getting new product at the shop is always fun but today, my goodness, I died and went straight to heaven. You see, our first shipment of Juliska arrived. For those who don't know, Juliska is beautiful glass that is mouth-blown in the Czech Republic. It is stunningly simple and fabulously ornate. It, like all of the lines I (try) to choose for the shop, can go traditional or contemporary. The pitchers are what every host needs for the dinner party table. The mouth of the pitcher form a heart; perfect for the newly engaged or the couple married for 30 years. When I say I love this stuff...I want to fill my whole house with it! Covered canisters in the powder room, a large hurricane with a candle on the dining table, and ooh those lamps! Please come see for yourself, you'll fall in love too.

Mother's Day is upon us and everyone has been shopping for lots of very feminine, girly things that will show their Moms just how much they are loved. The LoLLia bath & body line has been very popular for Mom, almost as popular as the PANDORA jewelry. As usual we are wrapping everything in out gorgeous turquoise paper with chocolate ribbons...really yummy looking!

Quinn is back for the summer...thank goodness. Her display abilities are wonderful and as of late I really feel like I could use a shot in the arm. We have a great new seaside display and I have other tricks up my sleeve. Photos will follow soon.
